Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs

This is a qualification that can make a difference. The Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs covers workers who work with those with drug and alcohol issues.

This course will give you the skills you need to assess the needs of clients and in turn provide the assistance and support they need to battle their problem.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to work in community based organisations, residential rehabilitation services and outreach services in roles such as case worker or family support worker.

This course combines theory along with plenty of practical experience with a work placement component allowing you to gain on the job training before you graduate.

Course structure

Total Units: 15
  • Work effectively in the alcohol and other drugs sector

  • Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework
  • Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drug issues
  • Follow WHS safety procedures for direct care work
  • Undertake case management for clients with complex needs
  • Use targeted communication skills to build relationships
  • Maintain and effective work environment
  • Apply First Aid (not included)*
  • Support the rights and safety of children and young people
  • Assess and respond to individuals at risk of suicide
  • Plan and conduct group activities
  • Apply understanding of mental health issues and recovery processes

  • Establish and maintain effective networks

* Apply First Aid must be completed in a face-to-face environment and students are required to arrange to undertake this unit with a local training organisation. Students are responsible for arranging and paying for completion of this unit.

Work Placements

You will need to undertake a 160 hours of work placement to complete this course.

Students may be required to undergo a criminal record check prior to commencing work placements.

The facility that you select should have access to an assessor with a TAE40104 – Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE10) qualification and the assessor needs to be approved by OTEN teacher prior to commencement of the work placement.
