Diploma of Children's Services

Who is This Child Care Course for?

This TAFE course is ideal for those seeking a recognised qualification to work in the child care sector. The Diploma of Children's Services qualifies you to work in centre-based and family day care, and supervise other staff and volunteers

In NSW, this diploma is the minimum standard required to manage a child care service. In most states, it is the highest qualification required at director or service manager level.

Please note that due to legislative requirements, you need to be at least 18 years of age to gain employment in the child services industry.

What Will I Learn?

You'll develop the skills required to meet the intellectual, language, physical, social and emotional needs of children in care. Among other things, you'll learn how to:

  • Provide experiences to facilitate children's expressive development
  • Work in partnership with families to care for children
  • Manage a service organisation

Child Care Course Requirements

A Prohibited Employment Declaration must be signed by students in courses where contact will be made with children. SEEK Learning will provide you with this form when you enrol.

As part of the course assessment, you'll need to arrange work placement for a total of 400 hours. This placement will need to be pre-approved by OTEN.

You must also complete a Senior First Aid certificate in order to receive the Diploma of Children's Services. Contact a SEEK Learning consultant to find out more about these requirements.

Course Structure

There are 4 stages to be completed in this TAFE child care diploma course.

Stage 1:

  • Support the development of children in the service
  • Interact effectively with children
  • Care for babies
  • Care for children
  • Deliver services/activities to stimulate children's development and enhance their leisure
  • Develop an understanding of children's interests and developmental needs
  • Ensure children's health and safety
  • Respond to illness, accidents and emergencies
  • Apply basic first aid
  • Participate in work place safety procedures
  • Identify and respond to children and young people at risk of harm
  • Work with a legal duty of care and ethical framework
  • Prepare nutritionally balanced food
  • Participating in the work environment
  • Workplace hygiene
  • Professional experience I
  • Orientation to children's services

Stage 2:

  • Foster and enhance children's development
  • Foster and enhance children's social, emotional and psychological development
  • Provide experiences which facilitate children's expressive development
  • Use music as a medium to enhance children's experience and development
  • Work in partnership with families to care for children
  • Implement inclusive policies/practices
  • Professional experience II

Stage 3:

  • Foster and enhance children's cognitive & language development
  • Plan care routine
  • Establish responsible behaviour plans
  • Provide experiences which enhance children's development and learning
  • Document, interpret and use information about the child
  • Support the rights and safety of children within duty of care
  • Establish, manage and monitor the implementation of safe & healthy environment
  • Manage workplace OHS management systems
  • Professional experience III

Stage 4:

  • Arrange/organise experiences which facilitate and enhance children's development
  • Design, implement and evaluate programs of the service
  • Plan the inclusion of children with additional needs
  • Manage a service organization
  • Undertake research activities
  • Professional experience IV
