What is distance education?
You don't need to be in the classroom to go back to school. If you have a busy work and home life, distance education makes further learning accessible and achievable.
When you study by distance education (also called correspondence) you don't need to attend classes in person. The courses are delivered by post – or sometimes online – which means you can schedule your study time around your other commitments.
Many of Australia's most respected educational institutions now offer correspondence courses that are identical to the qualifications they offer on campus.
SEEK Learning’s education providers offer a range of courses by distance education:
With so many options, there's nothing holding you back from kick-starting a new career or advancing your skills.
How distance education courses are delivered
Unlike online courses which are delivered entirely online, distance education courses can be delivered:
- by post
- by email
- via an online learning system
- in class
Most distance education courses use a combination of these methods. Depending on the course provider you study through, you may submit your assessments online, by post or in class.
The materials you'll need for the course may be in the form of online resources, or they may be textbooks or CDs you can use from home.
Study anytime, anywhere
Studying by correspondence is a great option if you live in a rural or regional area.
It also suits people who prefer the convenience of setting their own timetable. Distance education enables you to fit study in with a busy lifestyle and learn when it suits you – perhaps late at night, or during your lunch break at work.
A number of distance education courses are self-paced and have flexible enrolment dates, so you can choose when you want to start and how fast you want to go.
