What technical and professional skills do I need to become a Real Estate Agent?
Strong literacy and numeracy skills are key for Real Estate Agents when it comes to writing reports, creating marketing advertisements, completing industry forms and utilising databases. Other vital skills for a Real Estate Agent include relationship building, managing contacts and dealing with buyers and sellers.
By law, you must also hold a recognised qualification to work in the industry which will give you the knowledge required to carry out the functions of a Real Estate Agent.

What qualification will I need to become a Real Estate Agent?
Education requirements for Real Estate Agents differ across each state, with the Certificate of Registration course and the Agent’s Representative Program applicable across most of Australia. Either of these qualifications will allow you to work in the real estate industry under a Licensee:ACT

To become a Licensee and operate your own real estate agency, you will need to complete a Real Estate Licensing course then lodge your application with the regulatory body in your state.
As a licenced Real Estate Agent, you’ll be authorised to act on behalf of clients to sell, buy, manage or lease property, and may also own or manage an agency or act as an auctioneer.
If you don’t have your Real Estate License, you can work as a Real Estate Salesperson, or Agent’s Representative, and can undertake some of the duties of the Agent on their behalf.
A Diploma of Property Services (Agency Management) (CPP50307) is a great pathway for those considering a career in real estate because, for most states, it includes both the certificate of registration and the real estate license. This means you can start working in the industry while you study the Diploma, as soon as you finish the registration units.

Professional development is highly recommended for Real Estate Agents, and may even be a mandatory requirement to maintain your real estate license in some states. Ongoing learning ensures you’ll stay up to date with all areas of practice while continuing to grow your career.
