  1. First aid


    This unit provides you with the skills and the working knowledge required to understand and apply first aid.

  2. Ethical practice & small business planning


    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for massage therapists to establish the foundations of massage practice, evaluate what makes a sustainable massage practice and then to develop an approach to their own practice. 

    You will learn the skills and knowledge required to research information about compliance and ethical practice responsibilities, and then develop and monitor policies and procedures to meet those responsibilities. These responsibilities apply to people working independently or in teams or in roles with managerial responsibility for legal and ethical compliance in small and medium sized organisations. 

    You will also learn the skills and knowledge required for individuals who independently operate a small business to research and develop integrated business plans for achieving business goals and objectives. Individuals in this role are able to interpret business information and numerical data competently and are skilled communicators.

  3. Ageing & chronic disease management


    This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to respond to the goals and aspirations of older people, to provide support services in a manner that focuses on improving health outcomes and quality of life, and also to use a person-centered approach. You will learn how to work respectfully with people from diverse social groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. You will also learn how to determine and address specific issues faced by people who have a chronic disease, in the context of contributing to a holistic support approach.

  4. Massage assessment techniques


    This unit describes the skills and knowledge to establish and manage professional on-to-one relationships with clients in the context of providing an ongoing health service or intervention. This applies to community services or health workers who have defined responsibilities to work independently with clients within broad but established guidelines. 

    You will acquire the skills and knowledge required to develop, implement and monitor infection prevention and control systems and procedures in work contexts where health and personal care services are provided. This unit applies to people working in roles with managerial responsibilities for infection prevention and control in small to medium sized organisations. There may or may not be a team of workers involved. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to gather client information, make a physical assessment of the body and determines massage treatment options. All modules apply to massage therapists providing general health maintenance treatments. It does not include remedial massage assessment techniques. This unit applies to massage therapists.

  5. Massage treatment techniques


    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for provide massage treatments using a defined range of techniques and sequences. It applies to massage therapists providing general health maintenance treatments, but does not include remedial massage techniques. You will also acquire the skills and knowledge to establish, maintain and evaluate work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area, according to WHS legislative requirements. This unit applies to workers who have responsibility for WHS as part of their role, including workers with obligations under WHS legislation, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), or their officers (as defined by relevant legislation). The knowledge you acquire in this unit will be integrated and practiced in the clinic setting to hone your skills as a massage therapist

  6. Musculoskeletal assessment


    This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to:  

    • Gather client information 
    • Assess the needs of clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restriction in range of motion (ROM) 
    • Conduct special tests 
    • Develop a treatment plan 

    You will gain a strong understanding of functional anatomy throughout the unit.

  7. Remedial massage techniques


    This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide remedial massage treatments based on outcomes of an existing health assessment and treatment plan for clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restrictions in range of motion. This unit provides you with skills and knowledge of the following remedial massage techniques: 

    • Deep tissue massage & Trigger Point Therapy (including friction techniques, compressive techniques, passive soft tissue movement, deep tissue massage, neuromuscular technique, press and release) 
    • Myofascial Release & Thermal Therapies (including temperature therapy, topical applications) 
    • Lymphatic Drainage 
    • Mobilisation & Stretching (including Passive Joint Movement, Muscle energy technique, Stretching, PNF Stretching) 

    The knowledge you acquire in this unit will be integrated and practiced in the clinic setting to hone your skills as a massage therapist

  8. Research & evidence based practice


    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish the information need, gather information and critically analyse the information for relevance to own work. This unit investigates the specialised remedial massage treatments required for specific client groups and chronic conditions. Through research methods, you will learn how to critically evaluate and understand how medical conditions affect a client and adjust their treatment plan accordingly. This unit provides you with the knowledge and the skills to: 

    • Set-up and manage a clinical health practice 
    • Critically evaluate and research existing information to support and improve their work practice 
    • Develop specific treatment plans and protocols to suit the client’s needs 
    • Analyse and improve their own practice development

  9. Professional practice


    This unit explores your ability to apply self-reflective practices to all aspects of life, personal and work related. This will provide you with the skills to communicate and work effectively and ethically with clients at all times. You will also work on goal setting, monitoring and self-assessment to provide focus on continued self-development and improvement and growth, in practice.

  10. Pathology


    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for massage therapists to work within the Australian health care system and engage effectively with other health professionals, including writing referral reports. This unit is applicable for individuals (massage therapists) who autonomously plan and provide services for clients within the health or community sector. 

    This unit outlines the skills and knowledge required by massage therapists to analyse client health information and then plan appropriate health services within the scope of their role. In order to achieve this, you are introduced to an in-depth level of knowledge pertaining to anatomy and physiology.

  11. Specialised massage techniques


    This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to: 

    • Adapt remedial massage assessment and treatment protocols meeting the needs of clients at different stages of life and to be able to respond to unfamiliar client presentations in a professional manner 
    • The remedial massage needs of athletes, adjusting the assessment and treatment plan for preventative and injury based care 
    • Monitor and evaluate remedial massage treatments for individual clients and from a professional practice perspective
