  1. Essentials of sports marketing


    This unit provides you with the opportunity to learn how to effectively market a sports event or team. You will assess the marketing opportunity for an event or sports team amongst a defined target market. On selecting the marketing opportunity, each of the elements within the marketing mix will be considered, including place, product, price and promotion in order to optimise the execution of the opportunity. Tactical marketing issues will be evaluated to capitalise on changes to the marketing mix as necessary.

  2. Safety in sport


    This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to apply legislation relevant to organisational operations. It will focus on the analysis and interpretation of relevant legislations to determine legal compliance of an organisation in the sports and leisure industry. You will also cover the processes involved in developing, implementing and evaluating a risk management and WHS program within a sporting or leisure context.

  3. Coaching practices


    This subject will assist you in developing the necessary skills to source and develop knowledge of general principles of coaching, including National Sporting Organisation (NSO) sport specific requirements. Building on knowledge of the principles of coaching, you will explore the complexities of identifying, designing, implementing and evaluating a coaching program suitable for a chosen sport.

    Furthermore, the theoretical and practical understanding of facilitating groups will be developed to provide an insight into how successful teams operate.

  4. Athlete health & wellbeing


    This unit investigates the importance of nutritional and psychological principles as they relate to the athletic practices to support training, competition and recovery. You will gain the knowledge and skills required to analyse athletes’ needs, advising on sports psychology and nutritional strategies to incorporate improved practices into their daily lives to achieve peak performance related to their goals.

    Advancing your knowledge, skills and application of sports nutrition and sports psychology, this unit will enable you to administer meetings with clients, implementing strategies and practices relevant to clients’ needs, whilst recording and monitoring results and offering excellent feedback to athletes in a range of contexts. A variety of strategies are considered to increase the performance of an athlete or team in a range of situations.

  5. Drugs in sport


    This unit will provide you with the knowledge and skills to provide athletes with information about performance enhancing and prohibited drugs in sport. You will gain knowledge of the side effects of taking drugs in sport and implement strategies to create a drug free sporting environment using the resources available such as ASADA, WADA and the AIS.

    The unit may apply to personnel who are responsible for coaching athletes in a sport-specific training or competition and recreational sporting settings. This includes providing in-competition assistance to athletes and assuring they remain drug free through effective monitoring strategies.

  6. Event management


    This unit equips students with the knowledge and skills to plan and manage a sports event. You will learn how to deal with time, cost and quality standards as well as planning for risks, stakeholder communication, procurement and utilisation of internal resources. Finalising the delivery of the sports event and capturing lessons learnt for improving future events will also be covered.

  7. High performance training & injury management principles


    This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to plan and implement high performance and recovery programs as well as manage injuries for individual athletes and sporting teams. You will cover the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics; methods of fitness assessment; and liaising with support personnel to design and implement high performance training, recovery and injury programs using best practice.

    You will further learn how to effectively instruct safe practice; monitor athlete/program progression and strategize for signs and symptoms of overtraining and under recovery. Identifying a range of high performance recovery methods and techniques will assist you when evaluating and providing feedback to athletes and support personnel.

    For the dedicated coach, this unit will further enable you to identify current injury and illness data and trends in sport, formulate action plans and injury prevention strategies and programs to reduce incidence, implement the injury/illness prevention or management program, whilst monitoring the success of the initiative. To identify precursors to injury, you will also learn how to perform a comprehensive movement screen that builds on previous learning in anatomy and fitness testing.

  8. Staff recruitment


    This unit introduces the basics and importance of effective recruitment, selection and induction of staff, the fundamental roles of the HR Manager, and the way to equip the organisation with the people assets that are required to meet its goals. It is designed specifically to meet the HR needs in the health and sports industry.

    An important element of recruiting new staff is the ability to manage meetings effectively. Learning how to design, lead and review meetings is critical in management, and is brought to life with practical aspects of staff recruitment in the sporting environment.

  9. Developing sports participation


    For a sport to thrive it is important that there are defined strategies aimed at developing and increasing participation in sport. Developing and using excellent communication skills to work with key stakeholders, you will design and implement participation strategies and evaluate successes. This unit draws on many aspects of this course and will assist you to develop essential skills to enhance pathways for emerging talent and implement these strategies in schools, clubs and community environments.
