5 common study excuses – busted!

If you’ve been thinking about returning to study but you keep letting excuses get in your way, it’s time to get serious and take action! It costs too much

If you are currently working, study doesn’t have to mean giving up your job. You can work part-time or full-time and keep an income coming in while studying. Study might also be more affordable than you think. Some courses have government loan options such as FEE-HELP and VET FEE-HELP. For those not eligible, private financing could be available.

I don’t have time

Time can be a hurdle for those already balancing work and family. Thankfully, there are tons of online study and part-time options designed to fit in with your schedule, as well as allowing you to go at your own pace.

I’m too old to study

That awful saying about old dogs and new tricks couldn’t be further from the truth.You’re never too old to learn something new. In fact, having a few extra miles on the clock can work to your advantage, since you’re more likely to know what you want and have better time management skills.

I’m scared

If the idea of changing careers, moving forward or returning to work frightens you, embrace the fear – often it signals an important change is on the horizon. Sometimes we need to push ourselves beyond our comfort zones to get the results we really want, but you don’t have to white-knuckle it without support. If you’re scared:

  • talk to someone whose judgement you trust and bounce off ideas about potential change and the impact it could have
  • speak to someone in your network who has made a similar change and get their feedback on the challenges and benefits
  • make a list of the benefits and disadvantages of maintaining the status quo versus committing to the change
  • talk to a SEEK Learning Consultant about how you might best navigate the change that’s scaring you
