Careers that combine fun with fulfilment

Luckily for most of us, gone are the days of being forced to settle for a job that delivered a pay check, but not much more – replaced by a wide range of careers that offer a blend of fun and satisfaction with the ability to pay the bills.

But unless you have direct experience within these careers, it can be tricky to figure out exactly which career is right for you. Luckily, we’ve done the hard yards for you!

According to recent research conducted by SEEK, here are some of Australia’s top industries that combine fun with reward – as well as some of the career opportunities you can expect within each industry.

Education & Training

You’ll find the Education & Training industry at the top of the class when it comes to being the most fun and rewarding, with 63% of respondents marking the industry as an 8 or higher on a 10 point ‘rewarding’ scale, and nearly half (48%) giving a rating of 8 or higher on the ‘fun’ scale.

It’s this blend that attracted Primary School Teacher Sarah Krstev, who says ‘something that’s really satisfying is when kids have their little ‘light bulb’ moment and they share it with you - that’s why I get up every morning”.

It’s a sentiment echoed by survey respondents, with 59% scoring this industry an 8 or higher for ‘rewarding’ and 43% a rating of 8 or higher for ‘fun’.

Accounting

It seems the numbers stack up when it comes to a career in Accounting, with half of respondents rating the industry between 8 and 10 when it came to being rewarding, and 41% giving Accounting an 8 or more on the ‘fun’ scale.

Accountant Tim Caldwell says “most people think that an accountant sits behind a desk and doesn’t talk to anyone, which would be completely wrong”, instead citing one of the most enjoyable aspects of being an accountant as the interactive and collaborative working style built into his accounting firm.

As fellow Accountant Paul Monkus notes, “Accounting is not just about numbers, but helping businesses make the best decisions possible, by providing financial insights that a calculator or Siri can’t.

“For me, having complex and strategic discussions with high-level management is what makes this career not only rewarding, but fun along the way.”

Nutritionist Holly Patterson finds career fulfilment in helping her clients achieve a healthy lifestyle through the food they consume, saying ‘for me, staying inspired in the field of nutrition is easy because I love it. For builder Kristian Lorbergs, seeing a job well done for a client - combined with the enjoyment he gets from working outdoors - is part of what makes his career worthwhile.

“It’s a satisfying job because you’re transforming someone’s house into something they’ve always dreamed of – and a new space they can enjoy for the future. It’s a great feeling,” he says.

It’s a feeling likely shared by nearly 4 in 10 respondents, who rated the Construction industry an 8 or higher across both the ‘rewarding’ and ‘fun’ scale.
