7 ways to optimise your career

When it comes to your long-term plan to reach the top, it goes without saying that hard work and determination should be at the top of your list. However a great worth ethic and drive isn’t all you need. Did you know there are a few key changes that you can make right now to dial up your career? These 7 are a must.

1. Use the right keywords in your resume

Your CV is often the key to scoring an interview so make it as easy as possible for someone to see that you’re a strong candidate. Recruiters will scan your resume to ensure you have the right experience so be sure to include any keywords relevant to the particular role you’re applying for. Analyse the advertisement for the role you’re applying for and include any prominent keywords or phrases used in the ad when outlining your relevant experience on your resume.

2. Learn to maximise your time

Successful people often say that they map out their day first thing in the morning to make sure they use their time efficiently . Adopt this approach and get into the habit of writing a to-do list first thing in the morning so you know what your goals are for the rest of the day. This means you shouldn’t be spending hours reorganising your filing cabinet when it yields very little benefits for you and your career as a whole. Put that time to better use and instead tackle that report that will impress your manager at your next meeting.

3. Invest in yourself

You won’t be able to operate at optimum levels if you neglect your health and wellbeing. Regular exercise will give you the energy you need to power through your day and a healthy diet will help improve brain function. While it’s important to embrace work it’s also important to schedule regular periods of downtime. Stress will affect your ability to function at work so make relaxation a priority after hours.

4. Edit your social media presence

If there’s anything on your social media accounts that would make you cringe if your grandmother saw it, then it’s likely you wouldn’t want a potential employer seeing it either. Many employers will now do a social media check of job applicants so ensure that you’re making the best first impression. Save those happy snaps of you living it up with friends for the kitchen fridge and consider investing time into turning your social media channels into prime examples of thought leadership and passion for your industry. 

Follow the key players in your field on Twitter or Instagram and share your own expert insights to showcase your know-how to future employers. If you go down this route, be sure to keep your username professional and recognizable.

5. Do a career audit

Get into the habit of doing a yearly career check up to make sure you’re keeping up to date with industry expectations. Do some research on the experience and training employers are asking for when they’re advertising roles. If you find that there are any gaps in your skill set look into doing further study to ensure that your skills are on par with what is being sought after in the market.

6. Push your boundaries

It’s easy to become complacent at work. To keep growing and learning, consider challenging yourself to do one new thing at work every month that will push your boundaries. Volunteer to join a project that will give you the opportunity to work with new people, present a new initiative to your manager or get involved with the team that looks after social events. The biggest career growth can often come from stepping out of your comfort zone.

7. Focus on what’s going right

Negative interactions raise the levels of cortisol in our body which affects our ability to think and act effectively. Positive changes on the other hand will release oxytocin which can activate the networks in the part of your brain which can lead to more effective thinking. When you’re at work aim to keep the majority of your conversations about what’s going right, rather than what’s going wrong. 

Adopt the glass half full approach and you’ll find that you’re able to think more effectively and therefore produce better results. You’ll also find that this approach helps to foster a positive work environment as it helps to lift the moods of others around you too!
