The role of an Account Manager is to manage and oversee one or more accounts, clients or projects. In an advertising agency, the Account Manager will more often than not liaise directly with clients and understand their requirements, so that the right solution can be recommended.

As an Account Manager, and the client’s first point of contact for any project, Sian works to understand the client’s requirements and then prepares recommended solutions and responses in line with their business objectives.

Tell us a little bit more about your job, and what a typical day at work entails.

Always the most difficult question! I work with a range of clients on multiple projects; so most of my day is usually taken up by briefings, internal meetings, even project management. We also run strategic and planning workshops for our clients, so I’ll work closely with them in identifying a digital marketing roadmap and strategy for the next few months to a year.

How did you first come across your current role?

I was on the hunt for a job in the Advertising industry and just happened to be referred to Reactive for their digital advertising expertise. Two weeks of work experience, and here we are!

What education and training have you had that has really helped your career?

I studied a Bachelor in Business Communications, majoring in Advertising and Marketing. Even as I work, I continue attending industry events, talks and conferences to keep myself refreshed and up-to-date with all the latest in the Australian digital advertising space.

What’s best about being an Account Manager?

I really love working in an industry that’s constantly evolving, churning out new technologies for us to learn and then educate our clients on, and help with their digital advertising and marketing work.

What’s not so great then?

Perhaps the worst thing about working in digital is when technology decides to be a five-year-old and throw a tantrum right before a deadline. That hardly ever means a good time.

Because technology is always changing, how important is continuous education in the IT sector, and why?

In my role, it’s extremely important to stay on top of all the latest technologies and IT trends. Courses, industry conferences and online resources are all great ways to get you started and staying informed.

With so many subdivisions and career options within the IT industry, have you any advice for those looking for the ideal IT career?

When I first started, I had little ‘real’ IT experience aside from surfing the web and other basic activities, so that was a little intimidating at first. But I’ve learnt so much along the way, and I must say that there’s no better lesson than the ones you learn on the job. Even if it’s unfamiliar to you now, don’t be afraid of entering the world of IT and technology! You’ll learn so much as you progress, and it’s definitely such an exciting industry to be part of.
