Almost considered the 'rock stars' of the industry, a Digital Designer essentially designs what you see on your computer/mobile screen, ensuring that each design decision (colours, fonts, image sizes, everything!) will provide the best digital user experience.

Tess Braden, Junior Digital Designer

A Junior Digital Designer for Melbourne-based digital agency Reactive, Tess Braden originally came from traditional print design but took on the challenge of an entirely new media platform to expand her horizons.

Tell us a little bit more about your job, and what a typical day at work entails.

As a Junior Digital Designer, my days vary depending on the job I’m on and what stage the project is in. Sometimes I'm brought in at the initial research stage, the most important and the one I enjoy the most because your imagination is the only thing stopping you from collecting great ideas and visual references.

Other times, I'm brought into a project later to help finalise design concepts, roll out design extensions, and even work on general content maintenance and updates.

How did you first come across your current role?

I found out about the role availability through a design mentor with whom I still work closely. Because I was on the AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association) student council while still at Uni, I was able to meet a lot of new, emerging and familiar industry faces, and get an early head start for my career through networking.

What education and training have you had that has really helped your career?

While I went to University for my Bachelor of Communication Design, I've also been real lucky in that I got the opportunity to do a year-long industry internship, which has helped so much in my overall knowledge and understanding of the digital media space. Sometimes there’s only so much you can learn at school, and none of it can compare to actually entering the workforce.

What's best about being a Digital Designer?

Because the digital world continues to grow, so will my learning and knowledge. I also love that with my job, I can communicate visually and reach a wide audience easily because everybody is on the Internet nowadays.

What’s not so great then?

Being so entrenched in and consumed by digital every day, I find it easy to forget about the more traditional and physical forms of communication, like print or display or even TV. I think it’s always important to try and bring it back to the pen and paper at the start of every job.

Because technology is always changing, how important is continuous education in the IT sector, and why?

It's so important to stay up-to-date with the industry's latest. You always want the work you’re doing to be pushing existing boundaries, and the only way to do that is to make sure your finger is on the pulse of the latest industry happenings and events.

With so many subdivisions and career options within the IT industry, have you any advice for those looking for the ideal IT career?

My advice would be to know what you like and enjoy doing, then make your decision. There're now so many options to pursue in the IT industry but stick with the mentality to do what you love and you’ll never go wrong.
